What orders were issued during the President’s first week in office?
The new President has issued 33 executive actions since taking office on January 20th. These include six orders specifically impacting immigration:
  • Repeal the travel ban (also known as the “Muslim ban”).
  • Extend protection from deportation and work authorization for Liberians under the DED program until June 30, 2022.
  • Direct Congress to permanently protect DACA program recipients.
  • Stop construction of the border wall.
  • Require non-U.S. citizens to be included in the US Census count for redrawing congressional districts in 2021.
  • 100-day pause on deportations. Return deportation priorities to focus on specific groups such as those that are convicted of serious crimes or pose a threat to national security. This last order was blocked from going into effect by a judge on January 26th.
What is the Citizenship Act of 2021
In addition to all the new executive orders, the Biden administration sent the Citizenship Act of 2021 to Congress on his first day in office. The Citizenship Act is a proposed bill to reform the current immigration system in the USA. If approved, this proposal would provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of people living in the USA who are undocumented. DACA recipients, TPS holders and immigrant farm workers who meet certain requirements could be immediately eligible for a green card.
