In general, people encounter obstacles in their quest to achieve even the simplest and seemingly attainable goals, to choose the right career, to know how to manifest the wealth desired, or to create the deep and lasting relationships they want in life. Individuals need association with other human beings, to be encouraged, loved, needed and understood. There exist discrimination against immigrants in America and they are things immigrants need to know.
Racism is defined as the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another.
Discrimination is any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on grounds such as race, age, sex, national or ethnic origin. The person being discriminated against is considered inferior, and different from the person discriminating.
The hardest part of being an immigrant is to feel welcomed in the new community. In order to achieve that, immigrants have to overcome a lot of barriers.
Refugee and asylum seekers experience discrimination and racism based on race, ethnicity, and religion. They also encounter racial barriers in accessing employment and education; they do not have close friends, family and most of the time they face unemployment.
The government a have a moral obligation to both citizens and non-citizens, and they also have responsibilities to the community. The reality is that most refugees are often isolated, traumatized, affected by anxiety and depression and most of the time they do not receive counseling.
Recognize and address the racism and the types of discrimination refugees and asylum seekers are facing it’s a titanic but not an impossible challenge for the government of the United States of America.
On the other hand, the need to learn English and the importance of being informed is a challenge many immigrants have to understand and overcome. The best way to approach such a situation is to be aware that if they learn English they may have a better life and future.
Immigrants need to learn the English language in order to buy food, gifts, and to interact in a wide variety of situations, and gain knowledge about U.S. culture in general.
They have to be able to talk and ask for things they want or need, be prepared to hear questions and give answers.
I know from my own experience that learning a new language is overwhelming. But knowing about the culture, being able to communicate and interact with one’s new community and employer really helps and it is way worth it.
