The political climate has made it difficult for me as a visible Muslim woman to claim America as my own.

It’s been a little over 10 years since I moved to America. The challenges for immigrant women in America, as well as the hope to create change, have been a constant in my life.

In the 10 years that I have lived in this country, I have done all that I can to make America my home. But there have been challenges that I along with my fellow immigrants face. While challenges are individual, our hopes and resilience unite us all.

My dedication and positive outlook in the face of adversity is something that has helped me through the turbulent times. I am committed to improving the conditions of people in my community. In addition,  I want to give back to the city that has molded me into the person that I have become.

Working with the community members has been a rewarding experience and has greatly enhanced my understanding of the challenges that immigrants face. The way that the community maintains such a dedication to working towards their goals and putting down roots on foreign grounds is very inspiring to me and has allowed me to continue to work toward my dreams.

In the future, I want to help immigrant women and children integrate into their new home.

It is important to note that America is a country built on immigration. This country has taken in generation after generation of immigrants. I am a firm believer that the immigrants are what indeed makes America great. The immigrants that I know are all hard-working individuals.

The thing that keeps me grounded as an immigrant woman is the fact that I know where I come from. And I know where I want to go. The work that my parents have done to get me to where I am is also a motivating factor in my life.

My faith and my culture are something that is very important to me. Anti-Muslim sentiment in the USA has provided a challenge because I am an easily identifiable Muslim woman. But my beliefs teach me to be respectful to others even when my faith is under attack. While some rhetoric was unexpected, I appreciate the way that many people are taking a stand and not falling into the divisive culture.

Be active in your community!

As immigrant women and for society in general, it is essential to be active members of the community and be politically engaged. Americans are responding to chaos in large numbers. Many conversations are taking place. Americans are actively engaging in the political process.
