Where and how to get a GED®

You can take the GED® test online or in person. Find current information on how to take the test. Learn how to sign up, schedule, and pay for the GED® test.

How do I sign up to take the GED® test?

You have to create a free account with the official GED® website to schedule and pay for your test. You will need to provide your name, date of birth, email address, mailing address and phone number to get started. You do not need to pay until you are ready to make a test appointment.

How do I schedule my GED® test?

You will need to log into your GED® account to schedule your test. You will then need to choose which test or tests you want to take. The GED® has 4 separate tests for the following subjects: language arts, social studies, science, and math. 

You can schedule the test as soon as possible or at a later date.

You will be asked what the highest grade you finished is and your reason for why you did not finish school. You will be asked how you prepared for the test. You do not need to provide your social security number, gender, ethnicity, or race because those questions are all optional. 

Do I have to take all GED® subject tests on the same day?

You can take the 4 tests on the same day or on different days. Many states require you to take all 4 tests within a two-year period to get your GED® diploma. If you schedule 2 tests at the same time, you will only get a 10-minute break between them.

How long is the GED® test?

  • Math test is 115 minutes
  • Language Arts test is 150 minutes
  • Science test is 90 minutes 
  • Social Studies test is 70 minutes

Where can I take my GED® test?

You have the option of taking the GED® test online or in person. Both need to be scheduled through your GED account.

Can you take the GED® test online? 

Yes, you can take an online GED® test but you must meet certain requirements. You will need to have:

  • Quiet, private room
  • Good internet service
  • Computer with webcam, sound and microphone
  • Government-issued ID

Can you take the GED® test at home?

Yes, you can take the GED® test at home from your computer. You will need to meet the above requirements.

Can you take the GED® test in person?

Yes, you can take the GED® test in person at a testing center. Based on what subject test and language you are taking the test in, you will be given options of testing centers in your area. When you choose the center you will be shown the available days and times for the test.

Are testing accommodations available to people with disabilities?

Yes. When you create an account on GED.com, you’ll be asked if you’d like accommodated testing. Select “Yes,” and you’ll receive additional information on how to submit an accommodations request. Each request is considered on a case-by-case basis and typically takes 30 days to process after you submit the required forms.

Which languages can I take the GED® test in?

You can take the GED® tests in English or Spanish. Check your state policies to see which languages you can test in. 

What is the cost of a GED®?

The cost can be different depending on which state you live in. They average around $30-36 per test. Prices may also differ depending on if you are taking your test in person or online from your home. Find out how much the GED® subject test costs in your state. 

Can I reschedule or cancel my GED® test?

If you wish to reschedule or cancel your test, you must contact Pearson VUE 24 hours (one full business day) prior to your scheduled appointment at 1-877-(EXAM-GED) 392-6433. 

Can I retake the GED® test?

If you don’t pass a subject test, you can retake each test two more times without any time restrictions. If you don’t pass your third retest, you must wait 60 days before retaking a subject test. Check your state requirements, policies may change.

Can I take a practice test?

Yes. It is recommended to take a practice test. The official GED® website offers practice tests that cost $6.99 per test. You can also take a free practice test online in USAHello’s classroom.

Are there free online GED® classes?

Yes! USAHello offers a free GED® class online. These classes are self-paced and cover all 4 subjects. You can sign in at any time to study from your computer, tablet, or mobile device.
