Tips for the 2020 Census from a Census worker

Session de formation des agents de recensement aux États-Unis

I was a Census worker for the 2010 Census. The 2020 Census is starting soon, and I have some tips for newcomers.

The USA has a census every 10 years. The census is a survey that will show the government where the US population is and how to distribute public funds.

How the Census works

Between March 12 and March 20, you will receive a census notice in the mail. It will invite you to answer the Census online. Some households will get a paper form instead.

You can fill out a paper form and send it back, or you can fill out the form online. If you do not respond, you will get a reminder. If you still do not respond, a Census worker will visit you or call you in May, June, or July.  They may also visit or call if your answers are not complete.

My Census tips

I am a second-generation Census worker (my mother did it before me) and volunteer in the newcomer community. I have some tips for newcomers about the 2020 Census:

  • Fill out your form as soon as you can! A few minutes filling out the form is a lot quicker and easier when compared to a 20-minute surprise visit from a Census worker while you’re cooking dinner.
  • If you’re not sure how to answer something, do your best. There are no right or wrong answers.
  • If you have questions or concerns, be sure to reach out to trustworthy resources like USAHello or your regional Census Bureau office for guidance.

Are you interested in working for Census 2020?

If you are legally allowed to work in the USA, you can apply to be a Census worker. You do not have to be a US citizen.

Census workers are called « Census takers. » The US Census Bureau is especially looking for people with second-language skills. Being a Census worker for a few weeks allows you a flexible work schedule, competitive pay, and a chance to help your neighbors!

Two important notes from USAHello:

1) The 2020 US Census does not include a question about citizenship. You do not have to be a citizen to fill in the Census form! It is important that EVERYONE is counted.

2) The information on your form is confidential. US law says that the Census Bureau cannot give your information to any other government agency.
