Changes to TPS Afghanistan
TPS allows people from certain countries to stay and work in the U.S. if it is not safe for them to return home due to war, disasters, or other emergencies. On May 12, 2025, the U.S. government announced that TPS Afghanistan is ending on July 14, 2025.
This means:
- If you have TPS, you will lose your TPS status at the end of the day on July 14, 2025.
- If you have another status, that will still be valid.
- New applications will be accepted through May 20, 2025, but are not likely to be processed before July 14, 2025.
- If you filed for TPS, your application will not be processed after July 14, 2025.
- If you have a TPS-based work permit, it is automatically extended through July 14, 2025.
The U.S. government’s decision to end TPS for Afghanistan is currently being challenged in court and could change.
