What is the DV lottery?

The DV Lottery is officially called the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. It is also known as the Green Card lottery. It is a yearly program that allows people to enter for a chance to win a U.S. visa. A computer selects the winners randomly.

Can I apply for the DV lottery now?

No. The DV-2027 lottery is not open for registration.

On October 14, a federal judge ordered the government to move forward with the delayed lottery, but official registration dates have not been announced.

New requirements for future lotteries:

  • Most applicants must upload a scan of a valid, unexpired passport.
  • There is a $1 fee to enter.

What if I was selected for DV-2026?

If you were selected for DV-2026 and applied for a Green Card from inside the U.S., a court ordered USCIS to resume processing pending applications.

If you are applying through a U.S. embassy or consulate, the court ordered the State Department to resume normal processing and reconsider cases refused solely due to the Diversity Visa or 75-country visa pauses.

A federal judge ordered the State Department to continue processing certain DV-2026 cases through October 23, 2026. This applies to cases being processed through U.S. embassies and consulates and does not guarantee that you will receive a visa.
