Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan

Updated July 22, 2025
TPS Afghanistan ended on July 21, 2025. You can no longer apply for or renew TPS Afghanistan.

TPS for Afghanistan has ended

The last day of TPS was July 21, 2025. As of this date:

  • People from Afghanistan with TPS will no longer have this protection.
  • Work permits through TPS will no longer be valid

The decision to end TPS for Afghanistan is being challenged in court. It is not certain if that will lead to any changes.

What happens when TPS expires?

If you do not have another legal immigration status besides TPS, you will become undocumented and lose your work authorization. If you stay without legal status, you will risk being detained and deported.
