What are scholarships?

Scholarships are money awards to help you pay for your education. Many students apply for scholarships to help them pay for college in the USA. 

Some scholarships pay for your full tuition, while others offer a certain amount of money. You do not need to pay back a scholarship. 

Scholarships are given for different reasons. Some scholarships consider your financial need, field of study, how well you do in school, and how you are involved in your community.

How can I find scholarships? 

You can typically find information about scholarships online and by contacting your school’s financial aid office.

  • Many websites have scholarships you can filter by your location, level of study, major, and GPA. Careeronestop’s scholarship finder has a great list of scholarships, fellowships, grants, and awards.
  • A college’s financial aid page may list scholarships and grants you can apply for.
  • Your state education agency may also list local awards and grants. Local scholarships can be less competitive and easier to win than national scholarships
  • You can also ask local community groups if they have scholarships for immigrants and refugees.

The list below includes scholarships for immigrants, children of immigrants, refugees, and undocumented students. It is broken out into these categories: 

How else can I pay for school? 

You can also apply for grants and loans to pay for your education. You do not have to pay back grants. You can apply for a loan, which is money you borrow to attend a college or university. In most cases, you must repay the loan with interest.   

Federal and state governments, colleges, and private organizations offer grants and loans. The Office of Federal Student Aid provides grants, loans, and work-study funds for college or career school. Apply at Federal Application for Free Student Aid (FAFSA). Learn about the requirements for non-U.S. citizens.

National scholarships for immigrants and refugees

ASA Minority Fellowship Program
Scholarship for students from underrepresented groups, including Black/African American; Latinx; American Indian or Alaskan Native; or Asian or Pacific Islander students. Students must be seeking a doctoral degree in sociology. American Sociology Association (ASA) will provide $18,000 for each year of study.

Denes I. Bardos Award
Scholarship for first or second-generation immigrant high school seniors or college freshmen. Students will receive $1,000. Apply online.

Dream.US Scholarship – National Scholarship
A renewable scholarship with a stipend for DREAMers (DACA and TPS). This scholarship will pay for your tuition and fees. You may also receive a stipend to pay for your books and transportation. You must be planning to enroll full-time in an associate or bachelor’s degree program for the first time. High school graduates (or HSE diploma) must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Community college graduates must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. You must be eligible for in-state tuition at a partner college.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
HSF selects 10,000 students annually. The HSF Scholars have access to support services, including career services, mentorship, leadership development, knowledge building, and wellness training. It includes access to select internship and job opportunities with HSF corporate partners.

Native Forward Scholars Fund
Scholarship opportunities for American Indians and Alaska Natives enrolled in U.S. federally recognized Tribes or state-recognized Tribes. Individuals who can verify descendants of American Indian or Alaska Native lineage from Tribes are also eligible for funding through Native Forward Scholars Fund. Apply online for different types of scholarships.

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans
A scholarship for immigrants, refugees, and first-generation Americans. This scholarship will give up to $90,000 for two years of tuition and fees. You must be planning to enroll full-time in a graduate degree program.

United Negro College Fund (UNCF)
UNCF, United Negro College Fund, is a private scholarship provider to minority group members. Each year, more than $100 million are awarded to students attending more than 1,100 schools across the country. Apply online.

UNHCR 
The UN Refugee Agency has a list of scholarships available to refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons.

Chicana Latina Foundation
Scholarship for Chicana and Latina undergraduate and graduate students studying in one of the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, San Francisco, Sonoma, or Yolo. Students will receive $1,500 and leadership training.

Scholarship for high school immigrants or children of immigrants in the San Gabriel Valley area. Students will receive $1,000 for tuition and fees.

Latinos in Technology Scholarship
A scholarship of up to $30,000 is awarded to undergraduate Latino/Hispanic students, with preference given to juniors and seniors. Students must either have graduated from high school or attend a college in selected Northern California counties.

Vipin Agrawal Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship for students from low-income and immigrant backgrounds. Students must plan to pursue an undergraduate degree in science, computer science, technology, engineering, or medicine at a California state university. Students will receive $2,000 for each year of their study. Apply online.

Colorado

Latin American Educational Foundation Scholarship
Scholarships are awarded to students living in Colorado who have Hispanic/Latino heritage or are actively involved with the Hispanic/Latino community. Applicants must live in Colorado. Undocumented students and DACA recipients can apply.

District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia

Esperanza Education Fund
Scholarship for students born outside the USA or with both parents born outside the USA and planning to enroll full-time at an accredited public college or university. Applicants must be either a graduating senior at a high school or a recent GED grad residing in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia. The scholarships range from $5000 to $20,000, depending on financial need. Esperanza also provides students with mentors to help them navigate college, internships, and starting a career.

This scholarship is given by the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers. HIAS Chicago
HIAS provides academic scholarships to Jewish students who immigrated or whose family immigrated to the Chicago area with the assistance of HIAS Chicago, or who accessed HIAS’ immigration and citizenship services once in the United States. Scholarships include the Benton-Bernstein Scholarship for those entering the helping professions, the Tilly Warshaw Scholarship for high school graduates, and several others.

Minority Teachers of Illinois (MTI) Scholarship Program
Scholarships are awarded to Illinois residents who are minority students of either African American/Black, Hispanic American, Asian American, or Native American origin or qualified bilingual minority applicants. William A. Crawford Minority Teacher Scholarship
The Indiana Commission for Higher Education awards these scholarships to Black, Hispanic/Latinx students who are Indiana residents. Students must attend an eligible school in Indiana as full-time students and commit to teaching for at least three years in Indiana after graduation.

Wheaton Refugee Scholarship
Full scholarship for refugee students applying for a bachelor’s degree for the first time. Students must be pursuing liberal arts and sciences at Wheaton College in Massachusetts.

Fred S. Findling Memorial Immigrant Scholarship
The Fred S. Findling Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,500. It is open to any immigrant currently enrolled at a college or university in Michigan.

Ascend Educational Fund
Awards scholarships from $2,500 to $20,000 to immigrant students and children of immigrants who are graduating from a New York City high school to attend public or private colleges and universities, regardless of ethnicity, national origin, or immigration status.

Columbia University Scholarship for Displaced Students
A scholarship for displaced students pursuing undergraduate and graduate programs at Columbia University, including refugees, asylees, asylum seekers, and students with TPS, IDP, SIV, and humanitarian parole. Students will receive full tuition, housing, living, mentoring, and support.

The Mary Rosenblum Somit Scholarship fund provides $4,000 ($2,000 per semester) to an undergraduate student at the University of Buffalo, New York, majoring in biochemistry, biomedical sciences, neuroscience, or pharmacology and toxicology. Achievement Scholarship for Refugees and Immigrants of Wake County
Scholarship for first-generation US citizens, refugees, and immigrants graduating from Wake County, NC high schools. Students will be awarded up to $16,000 each year for up to 4 years to pursue education at a public or private college or university in North Carolina. To be eligible, students must live in Wake County, NC, for at least one year.

AMS Scholarship for Underserved Communities
The American Meteorological Society awards these scholarships to students traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic, Native American, and Black/African American students. Students must plan to pursue careers in the atmospheric or related oceanic and hydrologic sciences.

Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship
A two-week fellowship for entrepreneurs and social leaders. A fellowship is a job where you are not paid. Instead, you learn new skills and meet people who can help you. You must be interested in change and cross-cultural conversation between Jewish and Muslim communities. Apply online.

Catholic Relief Services International Development Fellows Program
A 12-month international development fellowship program for people pursuing a career in international relief and development. The fellowship will build skills in project management, project design, systems and operations, and partnership. You must have a graduate degree in a field relevant to international development. You also must have spent at least 6 months overseas in a developing country. You must be fluent in English and a second language.

English for Heritage Language Speakers (EHLS) Program
An 8-month program at Georgetown University training native speakers of 26 languages to improve their English communication skills from advanced to professional level. Hispanic Health Professional Student Scholarship
Scholarships are open to full-time graduate students (or BSN students) studying any of the following: Medicine (allopathic or osteopathic), Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing (including BSN), Master of Public Health or Health Policy, and Physician Associate. The requirements state that “Applicants are not required to be Hispanic. Scholarships are open to premium student members of ALPFA who will be attending college as a sophomore, junior, or senior, or will be enrolled in graduate school. Students must attend full-time and have a GPA of at least 3.0.

McDonald’s HACER National Scholarship

The US Hispanic Leadership Institute awards scholarships for students enrolled or accepted for enrollment as full-time undergraduate students at an accredited 4-year or 2-year institution. Students must have at least one parent with Hispanic ancestry. Non-US citizens, including DACA or undocumented students, are eligible. The scholarship provides $1,000 for students at 4-year institutions or $500 for students at 2-year institutions.
