Changes to TPS Syria
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) allows people from certain countries to stay and work in the U.S. if it is not safe for them to return home due to war, disasters, or other emergencies.
A federal judge has ordered that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syria must not end as planned on November 21, 2025. This means Syrians with TPS can keep their status and work permits while the court reviews the case. If the court makes a different decision later, this may change.
You still cannot newly apply for or renew TPS for Syria at this time.
The U.S. Supreme Court will review the case later in April. A final decision on whether TPS Syria will end is expected in June or July. Your TPS and work permits are still valid for now. Learn how court decisions work.
Work permit
Work permits are available to people with TPS and are known as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). It shows employers that you are allowed to work in the USA.
Because the court delayed the termination of TPS Syria, work authorization remains valid while the court order is in effect. This includes people with current TPS-related EADs.
If you have TPS under a previous designation, USCIS has extended the expiration date of EADs for TPS Syria holders while the court order is in effect. This includes EADs that expired on the following dates:
- September 30, 2025
- March 31, 2024
- September 30, 2022
- March 31, 2021

What happens when TPS expires?
If you do not have another legal immigration status besides TPS, you will become undocumented and lose your work authorization. If you stay without a legal status, you will risk being detained and deported.
