Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia

Imerekebishwa Juni 25, 2026
A federal court has temporarily blocked the government from ending TPS Somalia. TPS protections remain in place for now while the court case continues. You can no longer apply for or renew TPS Somalia.

On June 25, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the government can move forward with ending TPS for Haiti and Syria. The decision does not end TPS or work permits immediately. We are waiting for the lower courts and DHS to confirm the exact end dates. The ruling could also affect TPS court cases for other countries. Follow the National TPS Alliance for updates, and talk to an immigration lawyer about your options.

TPS Somalia changes

On March 13, 2026, a court temporarily paused the termination of TPS Somalia. This means the case will continue to be reviewed in court.

Due to the pause, as of this date:

  • People from Somalia with TPS still have this protection.
  • Work permits through TPS are still valid.
  • People with pending TPS applications have protection.
  • The pause will continue until the next court hearing.

The decision to end TPS Somalia is currently being challenged in court. This could change if a judge issues a new order. We will keep this page updated.

Court cases on immigration policies can change the rules and be confusing. Read our guide on how court decisions work.

What happens when TPS expires?

If you do not have another legal immigration status besides TPS, you will become undocumented and lose your work authorization. If you stay without legal status, you will risk being detained and deported.
