The old shirt
Elizabeth’s son wore the same old shirt with holes every day. “Why not wear one of your other shirts?” she said. But he didn’t want to – the old shirt was red (his favorite color) and it had the name of his favorite team on the back. One day, Elizabeth was in the secondhand store. A familiar flash of red on the men’s shirt rail caught her eye. She looked at the back of the shirt. It had the same team name! And it was her son’s size. Except for having no holes, the shirt was identical to her son’s.
Question: In this text, what does the word identical mean?
B. the same
Step 1 – read the directions
The directions say, “Read the passage of text. Then choose the best answer to the question.”
Now you know what you have to do. You are going to look at all the answers and decide which is the best one for answering the question.
Step 2 – read the question
The question says, “In this text, what does the word identical mean?”
Look at the key words in the question to get your mind ready to find the answer in the text.
The question is: “In this text, what does the word identical mean?” The key words are text and mean. The question is asking you for the meaning of a word in the piece of text you were given. That word is identical.
Now that you know what the question is, you can take another step.
Step 3 – read the text
Read the text above while you keep the question in your mind: “In this text, what does the word identical mean?” The text will help you see what the word means.
Step 4 – read the answer choices
Read all the answer choices one by one. Don’t choose your answer yet. First, cross off the wrong answer choices.
For each answer choice, ask yourself: “Is this the best answer? Is this what identical means?”
Let’s look at the answer choices.
- Look at answer choice A: different
Is this what identical means? Nothing in the text would makes sense if it meant different. So answer choice A is wrong.
- Look at answer choice B: the same
Is this what identical means? B is a good answer. It makes sense for the text. Is this the best answer? Don’t choose it yet. Remember to read all the choices in case there is a better one.
- Look at answer choice C: strong
Is this what identical means? There is nothing in the text about being strong or not strong. Identical is not to do with strong. So answer choice C is wrong.
- Look at answer choice D: favorite
Is this what identical means? The word favorite is in the text, but if you used favorite in the place of identical, the text would not make sense anymore. So answer choice D is wrong.
Step 5 – choose the best answer
You will choose B because it is the best answer to the question, “In this text, what does the word identical mean?” To select an answer, check the box or circle next to it.
